When was your company established?
Managed Objects was founded in McLean in 1997.
What is the origin of your company name?
Managed Objects name is derived from the theory of object modeling. The full legal name of the company is Managed Object Solutions. Managed Object Solutions was meant to describe the fact that our software could provide many solutions for displaying object data coming from integrated managed systems. For the last several years, we have referred to the company as Managed Objects because we felt it was easier to remember.
Who owns your company?
Managed Objects is a privately-held, venture capital-backed company. The company has raised approximately $50 million in funding to date from venture capital investors including, Lazard Technology Partners, JMI Equity, FTVentures, Fidelity Ventures and INTEL Capital.
What is your main business focus in Fairfax County?
Managed Objects pioneered and is now a leader within a software-based IT management solution market known as Business Service Management, or BSM, which helps large organizations simplify the management of IT and align IT with business. We do this in three ways: 1) we enable the IT enterprise to control change and minimize the risk of technology changes; 2) we provide tools for IT operations to mitigate the business impact of IT outages; and 3) our dashboards and reporting products enable IT to show the business managers the value of IT.
Who are your primary customers?
Our customers tend to be large organizations that have complex IT infrastructures, such as those with more than 5,000 servers. These include Global 2000 companies such as JPMorganChase, Credit Suisse, AIB, US Customs and Border Protection Agency, Defense Information Systems Agency, US Army, Progress Energy and Verizon. Managed Objects impressive roster of customers now numbers more than 300 organizations around the world.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
First, integration: Virtually any substantive IT environment will already have multiple IT management tools in production, but very frequently they are made by a variety of different vendors. Managed Objects' vendor-neutral approach allows customers to get the best of both worlds though integration: we consolidate multiple IT management tools without jettisoning the value of those existing investments. Second, visualization: As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Managed Objects enables IT enterprises to model highly complex IT infrastructures to deliver a logical, intuitive, and role-based view of business-focused IT services. Finally, time-to-value: Simply stated, we can implement our product faster. We can do in days or weeks what takes our nearest competitors months, or even years.

Managed Objects currently employs approximately 120 people on five continents.

Fairfax County has created a high-growth, business-friendly environment that results in several advantages. First, its sprawling technology sector attracts investors and customers alike, making it an attractive place to start or expand a business. Secondly, its location just outside of Washington, D.C., puts businesses near the seat of the federal governmentwhich also tends to have large IT infrastructures and an inherent need for products like ours. Finally, the presence of the campuses of three major universities and the largest community college in Virginia located means there is always a wealth of talent from which to draw to fuel Managed Objects growth.
