FCEDA’s Gordon named president of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra
50 th anniversary season set for the regional orchestra
Fairfax County, Virginia USA, July 14, 2006 — The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra (FSO) has named Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., its president for 2006-2008. Dr. Gordon is the president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). As president of the FSO, Dr. Gordon will lead the board of directors to raise the profile of the orchestra within the local business community and to emphasize how the symphony and other arts organizations improve the quality of life in Fairfax County.
Created in 1957, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra (www.FairfaxSymphony.org) has emerged over the years as one of the finest regional orchestras in the United States. The FSO will celebrate its 50 th anniversary during the 2006-2007 season that begins September 16. This also will be the 35 th anniversary season for FSO’s music director, Maestro William Hudson.
“There is a great connection between economic development and the arts, because a strong business community improves local arts organizations and the quality of life of a community,” Gordon said. “The FSO really is one of the crown jewels in our quality of life here. I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to lead the board of directors as we work to let more people know about this outstanding contributor to the cultural opportunities we have in Fairfax County.”
Each season, the orchestra performs a series of Masterworks concerts at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts. Members of the FSO participate in outreach to local schools through special concerts and classroom visits. Additionally, during the summer months the FSO performs free of charge throughout the county as part of the Arts in the Parks program.
